Who are the Silhouettes?

The National Silhouettes of Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity, Inc. are the official auxiliary organization for the wives and widows of members of Kappa Alpha Psi. While many people think of them simply as a “support group,” the organization has evolved into a service-focused national organization with its own leadership, programs, and philanthropic initiatives.

A Brief History

• 1947: The National Silhouettes officially became an organization during the Kappa Alpha Psi Conclave in Los Angeles, California, where they were organized to unite the wives and widows of Kappa Alpha Psi members across the country.

• 1947 to 1980: Local Silhouette groups began forming alongside alumni chapters, supporting fraternity programs while developing their own service projects and fellowship activities.

• 1980: The Silhouettes were formally recognized as the official auxiliary organization of Kappa Alpha Psi. Under Grand Polemarch Dr. Oliver Gumbs, they were granted representation on the Board of Directors of the Kappa Alpha Psi Foundation, reflecting their growing national impact.

Today

The National Silhouettes have grown into a nationwide organization with:

• Hundreds of local chapters and Members-at-Large.

• National and provincial conferences.

• Community service initiatives emphasizing health and wellness, education, scholarships, youth development, and family support.

• Independent elected officers and governance while remaining the official auxiliary of Kappa Alpha Psi.

Purpose

The National Silhouettes exist to:

• Support the mission and activities of Kappa Alpha Psi.

• Promote friendship and fellowship among members.

• Encourage community service and charitable giving.

• Coordinate local, provincial, and national Silhouette activities.

• Develop leadership opportunities for members.

• Welcome and support visiting families during Kappa events and Conclaves.

Membership

Traditionally, membership has been open to:

• Wives of initiated members of Kappa Alpha Psi.

• Widows of deceased Kappa Alpha Psi members who remain in good standing with the organization.

Many local organizations also include Members-at-Large, allowing eligible women in areas without a chartered chapter to participate until a chapter is established.
